What is Amethyst?

Amethyst is a quartz gemstone with a colour range from light violet to a deep purple.

The ancient Romans associated the color purple with their rulers and so unsurprisingly amethyst has been used ever since to adorn monarchs and rulers.

I personally think some of the lovliest gemstones I have ever seen have been amethysts and thankfully they do not cost very much because they are so abundant.

However, not all amethysts are alike. We have already emtioned the variety of colour, but that colour can also be unevenly spread through a stone. In general, the more even the colour across the stone, the most valuable the gem.
