What is Blue John Stone?

A famous set of caves in England's beautiful Peak District of Derbyshire ia home to the Blue John cave. It is here that the Blue John Stone is found. The stone is fluorspar (technically calcium fluoride which was discoloured by oil settling on the rock crystals millions of years ago.

Blue John has beautiful banded layers of purple and yellow or grey, making it appealing for decorative purposes. A number of local artists work Blue John stone on a small scale, producing unique jewellery pieces which are often of very high quality.
