What is Moissanite?

brilliant cut stoneSilicon Carbide has a similar structure to diamond. It was discovered in the late nineteenth century by Nobel Prize winner Dr. Ferdinand Frederick Henri Moissan.

Moissanite’s structure gives it high lustre and great strength. With a hardness of 9.25 (Mohs scale) It is stronger than Sapphires and for this reason is a good choice for gems.

For the same reason Moissanite is used extensively in engineering. Much of the Moissanite used in both engineering and jewellery is not naturally occuring, but has been manufactured in laboratories.

Moissanite jewelry should therefore only cost a small fraction of the price of jewelry containing real diamonds.
